Laminoplasty

What Is Laminoplasty?

If you suffer from severe neck pain, you might have painfully restricted spinal canals in your neck due to several possible causes. Possible causes may include arthritis, degenerative disc disease, disc herniation, bone spurs or a fracture. Any of these can cause cervical spinal stenosis. Laminoplasty relieves cervical spinal stenosis pressure immediately by creating more space for the nerve roots and spinal canal.

Narrowing the cervical canal can result in difficulty walking, numbness, weakness and pain in your limbs. Left untreated, it can even cause paralysis. That’s why the main goal of laminoplasty is to prevent further damage to your neurologic function. Like any surgery, laminoplasty has risks and potential complications. These can include pain, numbness, weakness, infection, bowel or bladder incontinence and spinal fluid leakage.

How long does it take to recover?

Although each patient heals differently, you can expect to be in the hospital for one or two days after laminoplasty. You will be allowed to go home when your vital signs are stable, your bladder is functioning normally and you can walk on your own without assistance. Most patients experience postsurgical pain in the back of their neck, which can be quite severe for several days after surgery. This will gradually improve over the next several months as your body heals. The surgeon will give you a list of instructions to follow during your recovery.

Our laminoplasty patients come to us from Vernon, South Windsor, Manchester, Hartford, Bloomfield, Ellington and neighboring communities.
