Cervical Radiculopathy Treatment Options
There is a wide range of treatment options available for cervical radiculopathy. The treatment will depend mainly on the underlying cause of the patient’s symptoms as well as the severity of signs and symptoms.
Nonsurgical treatments are usually tried first. If there is no improvement in cervical radiculopathy symptoms after 6 to 12 weeks of treatment, then surgery might be considered.
Nonsurgical Treatments for Cervical Radiculopathy
- Rest or activity modification.
- Physical therapy for more formal exercise management and training.
- Ice and/or heat therapy.
- Oral medications to manage symptoms, as long as there isn’t risk for further deterioration.
- Lumbar traction/spinal decompression therapy
- Epidural steroid injections can be very helpful and provide excellent relief that can last multiple weeks/months to many years in some cases.
Surgical Treatments for Cervical Radiculopathy
If an impairment exists, varying levels and degrees of surgery may be recommended as a treatment option for cervical radiculopathy, including:
- Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion
- Cervical Disc Replacement
